Faking it, by Kenneth Jay Lane, a memoir of the jeweler's life and work; with a foreword by Suzy; Principal Photography by John Bigelow Taylor. Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Publishers. Printed in Japan. 160 pages; hardback with dust jacket. Kenneth Jay Lane (1932-2003) is possibly the most famous of late 20th century costume jewelry. In this volume he paints a picture of his life and how he rose to the heights of fame and high society. There are invaluable insights into the inspiration for many of his pieces as well as prominent people who were his patrons and friends. First ladies such as Jacqueline Kennedy and Barbara Bush wore his jewelry and accessories as well as the Duchess of Windsor and other notables. Faking It is a wonderful find, and hearing the story behind Lane's career is fascinating.
